Jeremiah Baker-1777-1848
Jeremiah Baker was born in 1777 in North Carolina. At this time nothing is known about his early life. He married Miss Elizabeth Curry September 29, 1812. Elizabeth was born about 1790 in Georgia. She was the daughter of Revolutionary Soldier, Cary Curry and his wife, Mary.
Jeremiah enlisted in the army during the War of 1812 on November 1, 1814 in Elbert County, Georgia. He was a Private in Capt. Gaines Thompson’s Company of Infantry, 4 Regiment Georgia Militia. His service ended May 20, 1815 as shown by his Company Muster Rolls and his Company Pay Roll records.
The Baker family lived in several counties in Georgia. There are numerous land transactions involving Jeremiah Baker. In fact, there are probably more land records in Georgia that have not been found as of this time. The Bakers were known to have lived in the following counties in Georgia and Alabama, Jones County, Georgia in 1815, Pike County, Alabama 1821-1822, Monroe County, Georgia 1822-1827, Crawford County, Georgia, 1827-1833, Muscogee County, Georgia 1836-1845, and Barbour County (formerly Pike), Alabama 1846-1848.
Jeremiah Baker died at Mount Andrew, Barbour County, Alabama on October 22, 1848. He is said to be buried at the White Cemetery in Barbour County. Jeremiah did not leave a will. It is from his probate documents that we have learned about his life style and his children. The Baker Family during his lifetime seemed to be quite well to do. Elizabeth Curry Baker moved to Ashley County Arkansas in 1859. The move was made with her two youngest sons, James Morrison Baker and Thomas Elijah Baker. She died the same year at Fountain Hill, Ashley County, Arkansas. The cemetery Elizabeth is buried in is unknown.
There are family stories and remembrances of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Baker. Some of the information can be proved and some of it cannot. The stories should be read and enjoyed. How fortunate the Baker Family is to have them handed down through the years.
All four of Jeremiah Baker’s sons served in the Civil War. Franklin Elbert and Amos Monroe enlisted in Texas. James Morrison and Thomas Elijah enlisted in Arkansas.
