BENJAMIN PRESLEY "PRESS" BAKER


 Benjamin Presley "Press" Baker was the eldest son of George and Kate Baker.  According to his family Bible, "Press" was born 16 Feb. 1889 at Groesbeck, Texas.  He was a blacksmith by trade and lived in and around Limestone Co. for many years.  He enjoyed building and tinkering and patented a rotating valve.

 

On 19 July 1910, Benjamin married Avor Masouria Kilpatric at the Silas Wilson residence in Limestone County.  She was the daughter of Pinkney Charles Kilpatric and Elizabeth "Matilda" Henderson Kilpatric. Press passed away at St. Joseph's Hospital in Houston, Texas on 15 Aug. 1947.  He died of stomach cancer.  Avor died  February 19, 1953.  They are both buried at the Evergreen Cemetery in Crockett, Texas.

 

Benjamin Presley Baker was described by his nephew, Elmer Cowert, as a big, jolly, Irishman, who got up in the morning telling jokes and went to bed laughing.

1. Ulmer Alton "Buddy" Baker b. 22 Aug. 1911, Groesbeck d. 4 May 1979. Buddy married Mary Miranda Jones in Coolidge.

 

2. Alma Girtrude Baker b. 27 May 1913, Groesbeck d. 18 Nov. 1916.

 

3. Grady Presley "Pet" Baker b. 3 July 1920 Teague d. 24 August 1972. Grady first married Lydell Luper. On 7 October 1950, Grady married Emma Fay Musick of Crockett, Texas.

 

4. Babe Arnold Baker b. 12 October 1926, Mart, Texas d. 16 Oct. 1976 in Liberty, Mississippi. First married to Jenny Bergeron of Eunice, Louisiana on 23 February 1944. On 30 December 1944, Babe married  John Etta Ivy of Crockett, Texas.
